Improved Access to ECG Records

Improved Access to ECG Records as TeleMED Further Expands in Alberta

Through their combined efforts, TeleMED and Alberta Health Services deliver fully integrated medical diagnostic tests to thousands through Alberta Netcare –the name for all the projects related to the provincial Electronic Health Record. This ensures tests results and health records are now available to the more than 34,000 physicians, pharmacists and other health service providers who regularly access the Netcare Portal. Since these records are available to registered Alberta Netcare users at the point of care, health service providers can formulate and quickly implement evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.

With the integration of its medical diagnostic collection and management technology with two of the largest medical laboratories in Alberta, TeleMED Diagnostic Management (TeleMED) is responsible for more than 350,000 ECG records, with tracings, being added annually to the Netcare Portal – Alberta’s healthcare network that connects all family physicians with hospitals to facilitate health information data sharing. This allows for the further expansion of the delivery of medical diagnostic testing and the collection and management of patients records and results in the province of Alberta.

Integrated Auto-Faxing Solution

TELEMED’S INTEGRATED AUTO-FAXING SOLUTION DELIVERS SECURITY, SAVINGS AND PRODUCTIVITY

In 2015, when Vitalim Diagnostic Imaging (Vitalim) opened a state-of-the-art cardiac testing and diagnostic imaging practice just north of Toronto, it engaged Telemed Diagnostic Management Inc. (TeleMED) to design and deploy crucial healthcare technology infrastructure.  As part of that infrastructure, TeleMED’s proprietary ViTELflo application acts as a hub, providing a secure, cloud-based platform for centralization of test data from a variety of modalities and for test interpretation.  ViTELflo also automatically transmits those test results to Vitalim’s EMR.

Earlier this month, TeleMED enhanced the importance of ViTELflo to daily operations by incorporating  auto-fax information transmission capabilities.  With the addition of this functionality, Vitalim has converted from hand and mail delivery of test results to auto-faxing test results to its Referring Physicians.

The introduction of automated results faxing brings Vitalim one step closer to running a completely paperless diagnostic service and is already delivering value in numerous ways:

  1. It eliminates costs related to paper and other associated printing costs.
  1. It improves operational efficiency and eliminates the human intervention required for post-printing handling of hard copy results, including sorting, addressing and delivery.
  1. It manages the risk associated with delivery of results by automatically logging successful deliveries and providing exception reports on unsuccessful fax attempts.
  1. It significantly improves turnaround for Referring Physicians who have been accustomed to waiting for hand delivered results. Now they can receive a test result within minutes after the test has been interpreted.
  1. Vitalim is able to take advantage of high-volume production faxing without making any investment in hardware, software or IT services. Its automated faxing solution is included and integrated with the enterprise solution that TeleMED has provided, plus TeleMED provides any required maintenance in the course of providing support services for the entire solution that it has provided.
  1. TeleMED’s automated faxing solution is completely scalable. It can grow as Vitalim’s test volumes grow and can easily accommodate delivery of results from test modalities that Vitalim adds in the future.

Although Vitalim is running a specialized cardiology and imaging practice, the benefits of automated faxing can be equally enjoyed by any healthcare provider that conducts a large-scale diagnostic testing operation.  This includes multi-site diagnostic laboratory networks, hospital outpatient clinics and specialty clinics of all kinds.

“For a number of years, TeleMED has designed and deployed high-value communication solutions such as bi-directional system-to-system interfaces, system-to-system synchronizations and system-to-printer information routing”, says TeleMED’s President, Asa Lebel.  “We are pleased that we can now offer an easily deployable automated faxing solution that delivers improved security, cost reductions and greater efficiencies.  We expect that our clients will be eager to make automated faxing an integral part of their business communications strategy.”

TeleMED Technology Delivers 450% Improvement in Early ID of Critical Cardiac Conditions

Announcement: Priority Escalation Tool

In the recent past, we have spoken to you about or showed you our Priority Escalation Tool.  Therefore, we felt that it was appropriate to tell you, through the attached article, about the benefit that this technology is bringing to patients in parts of Alberta.  In that province, Alberta Health Services has mandated a standardized process for handling community laboratory patients that present with acute critical ECG interpretations.  The Priority Escalation Tool automates the identification of such interpretations before the patient even leaves the examination room so that urgent treatment can begin immediately.  Data shows that the deployment of this Tool has improved the identification of such cases by over 450%, thereby dramatically increasing the number of opportunities for improving patient outcomes through early intervention.

We are proud that this Tool is a unique feature that is only available through TeleMED.  However, we are even more proud that, through the Priority Escalation Tool and other innovations, TeleMED technology helps our partners to deliver the highest level of care to their patients.

TeleMED and UofA Partner

TeleMED Partners with the University of Alberta for Hypertension in Seniors Trial

Dr. Raj Padwal, of the University of Alberta, and his research team have selected TeleMED Diagnostic Management Inc. (TeleMED) as its Health Technology Partner in a study titled Telemonitoring and Protocolized Case Management for Hypertension in Seniors.  This study is funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the major federal agency for funding health research in Canada, and will be a randomized controlled trial to determine if telemonitoring is the optimal method for controlling blood pressure in Canadian seniors.

TeleMED Partners with the University of Alberta for Hypertension in Seniors Trial

According to study details, hypertension is highly prevalent in seniors with diabetes and substantially increases morbidity, mortality and health costs. However, treatment of hypertension in seniors with diabetes is a complex challenge.  The need for aggressive BP control in seniors with diabetes must be balanced against the very real risk of serious treatment-related complications.  Currently, office BP measurements are used to monitor the vast majority of Canadians with hypertension.  However, office measurements require patients to attend office appointments and represents a barrier for seniors with mobility or financial limitations.  Furthermore, measurements are usually taken infrequently (i.e., every few months) and this limits the ability to make timely therapeutic adjustments in the event that the BP is low or high.  As a result, the Canadian Hypertension Education Program Recommendations Task Force (CHEP) recently released a strong endorsement of out-of-office over in-office measurements.  Currently, though, the optimal implementation method for use in Canada, in terms of effectiveness, acceptability and costs, remains unclear.

Over 20 published trials reported clinically important BP reductions using home BP telemonitoring and case management.  No trial in seniors has ever been performed and it is important to confirm feasibility, effectiveness, safety, usability and acceptability in this population specifically, or in Canada more generally.  This study will be a 300 patient randomized trial in community-dwelling seniors that compares three in-home measurement models – measurement without telemonitoring, measurement with telemonitoring alone and measurement with telemonitoring plus case management.

TeleMED will custom-design, engineer, deploy and maintain a web portal for securely storing clinical data, controlling clinician access and displaying data.  When designing the web portal, data interpretation and display are two key components that will be considered.  Relevant data trends will be displayed for ease of interpretation, providing easier decision-making for the clinician. This will include any relevant data calculations such as daily, weekly and monthly BP averages and mean arterial pressure displayed on the graph with systolic and diastolic measurements. Data trends over time are vital; therefore, threshold based alert flags will be incorporated into the template to provide alarms when dangerous values and trends are transmitted by a patient. These thresholds will be set to correspond directly with the Canadian Hypertension Guidelines.

TeleMED’s role in this study leverages its extensive experience in providing comprehensive data management solutions to community laboratory networks, hospitals, research organizations and in home care settings across Canada.  Its proprietary, sophisticated and intuitive ViTELflo data management system centralizes and distributes a wide range of medical diagnostic data, in an easy, rapid, secure and scalable manner, to stakeholders at multiple points.  In addition, it supports large-scale storage and customizable data analytics.  Assuming that this study demonstrates that BP telemonitoring and case management is valuable, safe and cost-effective, TeleMED has the resources and infrastructure to commercialize a fully-functional, user-friendly system, to scale up that system throughout Canada and to guarantee system sustainability.

DynaLIFEDx Extends Service With TeleMED: ECG Testing on Mobile Devices

In September of 2015, DynaLIFEDx (DynaLIFE) will be upgrading its Laboratory Home Collection Service by introducing an electronic Mobile ECG solution from Telemed Diagnostic Management Inc. (TeleMED).   The addition of 24 mobile devices allows DynaLIFE to deliver the same operation efficiency and high quality of care to those patients who are unable to leave their residence for an appointment as with their patient care center.

Since 2007 DynaLIFE has been using the customizable software by TeleMED to process the diagnostic tests it has conducted at its patient care centres where the collection of ECG data had been paper based. Now, with tablets loaded with the TeleMED vital sign management solution, technicians are able to travel to patient homes and nursing homes to continue delivering ECG testing in the Northern Alberta region. The test results are automatically transmitted and stored by DynaLIFEs internal medical records application Sunquest LIS, where the system is fully complinace with all PIA regulation, and distributed to  the patient circle of care. The results are then electronically transferred to Netcare the Alberta-wide Electronic Health Record management system.

TeleMED, an ISO 13485:2003 certified software developer, has been a pioneer in the development and deployment of powerful but easy to use, cloud based solutions for the management of non-invasive medical test data within a diagnostic environment. The success of these solutions has led to increased productivity, profits and satisfaction for thousands of users, at locations throughout Canada.

Oren Sadeh, Director of Operations at TeleMED reports that “For medical institution and home-based patients, the conversion to TeleMED mobile management of their tests means that the turnaround from test acquisition to test interpretation and distribution to all stake holders has been cut in half.  Faster turnaround time means reduced patient anxiety and more responsive treatment for patients”. He continues by stating that “it is notable that prior to this expansion DynaLIFE’s ECG collection was paper based, required manual labour and provided PIA compliance challenges. Now it is paperless, labour is practically eliminated and it is much easier to manage PIA compliances. “This mobile solution will allow DynaLIFE to offer a wide range of non- invasive medical diagnostic tests to patients throughout the Northern Alberta region”.

Spirometry Test is Underutilized in Ontario

According to recent article by Reuters, 18.2% of the Ontario population have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and this number is rising. The article continues by stating that in 2014 in Ontario 11.4 per cent of people over the age of 35 have COPD, which is a 3.3 per cent increase over the 2011 figure. The appropriate use of spirometry test can be used to diagnose respiratory issues in their early stages when many may not even be aware they have a problem. If respiratory issues are detected early they can be treated the costly use of unnecessary inhalers and visits to the hospital can be prevented.

Spirometry is a simple and cost effective test that can be used by doctors to test the function of the lungs and diagnose COPD. According to the Lung Association of Ontario, this underutilized test can be given to:

  1. those over 40 and smoke (or use to);
  2. those who cough regularly;
  3. those who experience shortness of breath or wheezing during mild exertion;
  4. those that get colds that last longer than others.

Telemed Diagnostic Management Inc. (TeleMED) can play a significant role in correcting this problem.  Through its Diagnostics for Doctors program, TeleMED empowers Family Physicians to prescribe and perform a spirometry test on a patient in one visit.  Physicians can now offer their patients the convenience of office diagnostic services, using the same technology that has been used in traditional community testing environments.
